2010 Reflections, 2011 Predictions
The year of 2010 was considered a rough
year for the United States. There was a variety of economic
issues, a tragic oil spill, and two tumultuous wars.
The world's troubles were no less; they also included
evident with failing economies, political struggles
and natural disasters.
The environment faced both natural and
man-made disasters in 2010. An earthquake in Haiti rocked
the country to its roots early in the year. European
travel and United Kingdom travel was suspended, disrupting
traveler's schedules for the better part of a week.
When a volcano in Iceland erupted, making it too dangerous
for commercial flights to fly. The Gulf of Mexico was
tainted by an oil spill of massive proportions. Destroying
a way of life and ecosystem throughout the Gulf. The
oil gushed unchecked into the serene waters, for more
than 100 days. BP was accused of mismanagement and the
spill was labelled Obama's "Katrina" due to the delayed
response and reaction of the Administration.
On the other side of the globe, the Middle
East suffered through massive floods, resulting in 1/5
of Pakistan being under water. The country sides of
Russia and Israel were scarred by wildfires.
2010 was also a year of unusual political
events in the United States. Blue-blooded Massachusett's
elected Scott Brown, a Republican candidate to take
the senate seat of late Senator Ted Kennedy. In the
mid-term elections, the Republicans regained control
of the House of Representatives, and the backlash against
the incumbents and influence of the Tea Party were evident.
However, the Democrats were not without victories, with
the passage of Health care reform and the repeal of
"Don't Ask Don't Tell".
Arizona took a stand on illegal immigration,
filing a law that was popular with the people, but not
popular with the Democratic majority in the Congress.
The Federal Government along with several other States
filed a suit against Arizona. California even threatened
to boycott the state of Arizona. Immigration was a hot
issue in 2010 with Anchor Babies and the Dream Act both
receiving political play, but neither resulted in political
action.
Other significant events included: the
Ground Zero Mosque debate, rising tensions between North
and South Korea, honor killings and the publicized stonings
of women accused of adultery in the Middle East.
2010 rated high on the intrigue meter
with the "Russian Spy swap" and the sexy Anna Chapman
capturing the interest and intrigue of the world.
The organization WikiLeaks drew attention
by posting a host of controversial classified documents.
Some hailed the Wikileaks founder Assange, a hero, others
called for criminal prosecution. Julian Assange always
the advocate for transparency, may have had a different
view when the police report from his criminal rape case
were leaked online.
The entertainment world had several successes.
Avatar was a huge Box Office hit, the edgy teen show
Glee gained popularity and the Beatles finally inked
a deal with iTunes. Many stars that had once shown bright
dimmed in 2010. Tiger's cheating and philandering ways
came to light, losing him endorsements and the respect
of fans. The Blagovich Trial and R rated tapes and recordings
while focused on politics, and corruption were also
rated high for their entertainment value.
The year of 2010 did have it's miracle,
with the amazing survival of 33 Chilean miners buried
alive for more than 2 months.
What is in store for 2011? It is likely
that there will be a tightening in spending with towns,
counties, states and countries attempting to curb their
spending throughout the US, while maintaining services.
