10 Tips For Improved Time Management
By Sharon Housley
Managing time is a major struggle for
many of us. Lack of productivity and procrastination
are usually the result of poor time management. Make
the most of your time by taking advantage of these helpful
tips...
1. Make Lists
Lists help keep you focused and on task.
Create a list of tasks in advance for the upcoming day.
When you find yourself distracted or unsure of what
to do next, refer to the list, which will help put yourself
back on track. When you complete a task, cross that
item off the list -- this will give you a sense of accomplishment,
and will also help motivate you to tackle the next item
on the list.
2. Keep It Clean
A clean workspace will lead to increased
productivity. Keep your workspace organized and uncluttered,
so that it will not hinder your ability to accomplish
things.
3. Limit Communications Checking
There are so many communication channels
in our workplace that they can often be more of a hindrance
than a help. Limit the time you spend checking emails,
voicemails, and discussion groups, and restrict those
sessions to a few specific times during the workday.
If you constantly monitor your communication channels,
you will discover that it can quickly consume huge portions
of your day.
4. Multi-tasking
Learning how to multi-task can result
in an increase in productivity. If you can master the
art of multi-tasking, you may discover that you can
get significantly more work done. If you are doing a
menial task that requires little thought or effort,
consider what else you can manage to do at the same
time.
5. Incentive
Everyone needs a reward now and then.
Consider various ways to reward yourself for hard work
and getting things accomplished.
6. Use Your Time Wisely
If you commute, or have times in your
schedule when you just spend time waiting for something,
use that time productively by bringing your work with
you, listening to podcasts that relate to your business,
or just getting caught up on your business reading.
Using your time wisely will often result in turning
unproductive time into productive time.
7. Processes
Many people place little value on the
actual processes and the steps we go through to accomplish
a specific task. Refining the process and making the
system more efficient will often increase productivity.
8. Scale What Works
Scalability is a buzzword in tech circles,
but consider the items in your life that are already
efficient and effective. Then consider how they might
be applied to other parts of your day.
9. Use Tools
Technology has produced a wonderful array
of tools that can automate tedious processes. You can
often utilize tools that will assist you in getting
more accomplished.
10. Evaluate And Reflect
Take a few moments each day to reflect
on what worked and what did not. This can often be motivational,
and will give you insight into what processes in your
day need attention or improvement.
